A Kidz World for the Final Week of Camp Skillz: Week 4 Recap

The final week of Camp Skillz for the summer of 2024 was a blend of creativity, teamwork, and discovery. This week, themed around creation, taste, experimentation, and collaboration, provided our campers with unique opportunities to engage in various activities. Here are some of the highlights from Week 4:

Screen Scene: Crafting Cards with Kindness

In Screen Scene, campers explored the world of printmaking. They created a set of 12 cards using two different techniques: styrofoam prints and digital prints. The objective was not only to master these artistic methods but also to design cards meant to encourage and support others. Campers infused their creativity into each card, emphasizing the importance of kindness and community. They also designed boxes to hold their card sets, resulting in beautifully packaged messages of encouragement. This activity fostered artistic expression and highlighted the power of positive communication.

World's Greatest Lemonade: A Refreshing Entrepreneurial Experience

The World's Greatest Lemonade stand gave campers a taste of entrepreneurship. Divided into teams, the youngest campers learned the basics of measuring and making lemonade, while older campers focused on developing marketing strategies, pricing, and other business elements. They experimented with flavors, tested recipes, and honed their sales pitches. The final lemonade stand event was a first of its kind for Camp Skillz, with campers enthusiastically selling their creations to fellow campers and staff. This project-based food activity taught valuable lessons in teamwork, entrepreneurship, and the joy of bringing an idea to fruition.

Animation Station: Bringing Clay Characters to Life

At Animation Station, campers discovered the world of animation by creating clay figures and towns. They crafted stories where characters faced challenges and used the value of the week to respond to these obstacles. The process involved patience and meticulous attention to detail as campers brought their clay characters to life through stop-motion animation. The resulting videos were a testament to their creativity and resilience, showcasing stories that reflected important values and lessons. This activity allowed campers to explore their artistic talents while understanding the technical aspects of animation.

Narrative Nook: Storytelling Adventures

Narrative Nook was a haven for budding writers and storytellers. Campers were guided through the process of crafting and writing their own stories, choosing characters, settings, conflicts, climaxes, and resolutions. Additionally, a team of actors brought their storylines to life, portraying scenes as imagined by the students. The storytelling showcase at the end of the week captivated audiences with tales of adventure, mystery, and fantasy. This activity not only honed writing skills but also boosted confidence in public speaking and presentation.

Get Crafty!: Unleashing Creativity Through Prototyping

Get Crafty! offered a variety of hands-on projects aimed at addressing community needs. Campers were given prompts and a set of supplies, such as glue, duct tape, string, and hot glue, to creatively build prototypes. They worked in teams to identify community needs, workshop proposals, present their ideas, and receive feedback. Projects ranged from upcycling used items to constructing new prototypes with PVC pipes and connectors. This activity promoted innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration, resulting in impressive and practical solutions.

Conclusion

Week 4 captured the spirit of Camp Skillz—an environment where children can explore new interests, develop skills, and build lasting friendships. We’re grateful for the memories made and look forward to welcoming our campers back for another summer of adventure and learning next year!
