A Waray Worship Project

Last October Brett Madron wrote about M.C. Cañanes and his efforts writing Waray-Waray Worship Music in the Philippines. If you haven’t had a chance to check that out, you can read it HERE as a preface to the following article.

Andrew Greer is a Dove Award Nominated Singer-Songwriter. M.C. and Mayel and the project overall benefited greatly from his experience and willingness to share his talents.

This summer my friend Andrew Greer and I traveled to the Philippines to begin work on a Waray-Waray Worship Record incorporating songs written and composed by M.C. and Mayel, another one of our South East Asia Regional Team Interns. Andrew and I worked with M.C. and Mayel on the arrangements and recorded the main instrumentation and vocals for each song. To complete the project, Andrew and I will be working together and remotely with M.C. and Mayel to complete the songs incorporating musicians and recording engineers from both the US and the Philippines.

As part of the project we filmed some videos with acoustic versions of songs from the record; we were able to make use of the beautiful environment around us.

The Lord has brought us together for this purpose in a wonderful way. Andrew is an established musician and songwriter in the Christian music industry. M.C. is a skilled guitarist and songwriter, and he has been developing those skills further over the last year of his internship. Mayel is newer to music, but has a great voice and an incredible heart for worship. And I have been blessed with nearly a decade of experience engineering at Center Street Recording Studios which has enabled me to bring a level of expertise to the table to make for a great project. God values people coming together with their various gifts to serve one another and it’s a wonderful privilege to be a part of that process (Romans 12:4).

Worship through music is a way that many believers around the world connect with God. There is an element of vulnerability involved in singing in a communal setting that opens us up to the prompting of God’s spirit. Singing songs to the Lord is an essential component in our relationships with God both individually and corporately (Eph. 5:19). Everyone should be able to worship God in their own language. I am thrilled to be able to work with this team to offer people throughout the Eastern Visayas a record that will help them connect with God in their native tongue.
