A Week in the Life: Philippines

Our Tahanan Community Center Ministry Coordinator Rina Miller reflects on last week's activities at Tahanan and in the nearby community.

This week was full of events for us.

This Monday, we attended Mac and Jenrose’s Classroom Award Ceremony. We have been working with this brother and sister duo for a few years now and it was great to see the fruit of that effort. Between the two of them they received the Determined Award, the Helpful Award, and the Motivator Award. We were so proud of them!

My Tuesday mornings are committed to working with women at the local jail and this week they prepared themselves for me too. They were all ready, and I had their attention as Tuesday is not usually a visitation day. We’re thankful that the warden has given us this day and we appreciate the opportunity to work with them. All of the women participate and cooperate well with every activity I facilitate. This week I facilitated games, Bible study, and did a basic health checkup.

Despite heavy rains, our Tuesday Young Adult Bible study and hangout at Tahanan continued. People just keep coming and enjoying each other’s company for our game times and enjoy learning God’s word during the Bible Studies. This week’s lesson was taught by Clark Miller.

Wednesday, we assisted the Cumpio Midwifery Clinic in Tacloban. Some of our friends from Mercy in Action in Olongapo arrived and will be assisting with operations at the clinic. It will be a big help for them as the clinic needs additional workers. We also hosted our first Married Couples Hang-out Night for friends and people we work with. It was fun to have the house filled for dinner, good talks and games. We are planning to do these kinds of hang-out nights once a month at Tahanan and to offer childcare so that couples can learn the Word together.

Thursday, we attended the graduation and recognition ceremony for the students of Baras Elementary School. Mac, Jenrose, and the other students did a dance number, and Jenrose finished second in her class! It’s been such a blessing to see these children have a great time learning!

Friday, we were able to visit the house of one of our Tahanan Summer Interns, in Sta. Fe, Leyte to get further acquainted with his family and to talk about this summer's responsibilities. We brought food for lunch and ate together with his family. Despite their hard situation, his family is striving to do their best, even though they didn’t qualify for government assistance after Typhoon Haiyan. Their house is walled up by tarps only, and we were impressed by how they worked hard to keep their place clean and in order.
