On March 25th, Saturday, CASE took youth from all four of our sites on a field trip to The Frist Art Museum. It was a first for many of our students. Students toured the exhibits, including the work of Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Chocktaw and Cherokee nations, who weaved together his Native American heritage and modernist art styles into vibrant sculptures, paintings, and even video presentations. It was especially exciting for our students to see Jeffrey Gibson’s artwork in person, as they recently learned about and created artwork inspired by him through the Frist’s Art Trunk program.
Students also got to make their own art. The Frist puts on ArtQuest, a hands-on art exhibit, where students got to create art that parallels the current exhibit. Youth created beaded bracelets, stop-motion movies, colorful art prints, and a number of other activities.
Field trips are a chance for us to enrich the lives of students, and it also creates shared memories that help form deeper relationships in our program. We’ve been doing field trips for many years, and we have seen the impression they make on our students. I’ve heard students talk about field trips that they went on years later.

We had a great turnout for the event. About 35 youth and around a dozen parents and siblings got to join us for the day. We are very grateful to the Frist for partnering with us this year. We were able to bring the Frist to our classrooms through the art trunks program, and now they helped us bring our students to the Frist.
