Celebrating Labor Day & Remembering the Immigrant and Refugees

As Labor Day draws near, our hearts turn to the invaluable contributions of workers, especially those who have left their homelands in pursuit of better opportunities. This Labor Day, let's embrace the spirit of compassion and justice by focusing on the efforts to support immigrant and refugee laborers. Through advocacy, education, and empowerment, we can make a meaningful impact that resonates with the principles of unity, empathy, and solidarity.

One way that our program is distinct and supports the vulnerable is by equipping immigrants & refugees with vital skills for work, home, and daily life. Mirroring Jesus' approach, our teachers adapt—holding classes in homes, fitting busy schedules. Together, we're crafting a supportive community that uplifts and empowers.

The principles underlying compassionate action align profoundly with the spirit of Labor Day, echoing the core teachings of understanding, respect, and care for all individuals.Welcoming the Stranger: In the Old Testament, the call to welcome and care for strangers is emphasized. Leviticus 19:34 states, "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt." This principle reminds us of the importance of showing compassion and understanding to immigrants and refugees, recognizing their inherent dignity.

Supporting the Vulnerable: The Bible repeatedly directs us to provide for those who are vulnerable, including immigrants. Deuteronomy 10:18-19 states, "He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt." This highlights the need to stand up for the rights and well-being of immigrant and refugee laborers. At Global Outreach Developments International, we aim to do this through advocacy, education, and empowerment.

It is through Advocacy that we help to elevate the voices of the immigrant and refugees. Advocacy stands as a powerful tool for change, amplifying the voices of immigrant and refugee laborers. In the same way that the Bible emphasizes defending the vulnerable, we strive to advocate for their rights, fair treatment, and better working conditions, reflecting our shared commitment to justice.

We utilize education to help illuminate paths and give direction. Education is a beacon of hope, offering immigrants and refugees opportunities for growth and success. Providing education paves the way for individuals to improve their lives and contribute more fully to society, nurturing the potential within each person.

Lastly, we focus on empowerment which nurtures the dignity of some of the most vulnerable. Empowerment lies at the heart of compassionate action. Extending support, resources, and guidance upholds the dignity of immigrant and refugee laborers, enabling them to stand tall and strong in their pursuit of a better life. Below are some other examples of assistance and support that both non-profits and individuals can participate in supporting immigrants and refugees.

Providing or collecting donations is always helpful. However, this generosity needs to be done with intentionality. It is always as good rule of thumb to provide new or like-new items that are in good condition when making donations. Love your neighbor as yourself, and think about what you would want to receive if you were on the side of receiving.
  1. Raise Awareness: Share stories and information about the challenges faced by immigrant and refugee laborers on social media, helping to create empathy and understanding.

  2. Volunteer: Contribute your time and skills to organizations that support immigrants and refugees, whether it's teaching language classes or offering mentorship.

  3. Donate: Financial contributions to non-profit organizations that focus on education, legal aid, and empowerment can make a significant difference.

  4. Offer Job Opportunities: If possible, provide job opportunities or connect immigrants and refugees with potential employers in your network.

  5. Cultivate Inclusion: Create welcoming spaces in your community, workplace, or neighborhood, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and accepted.

As we approach Labor Day, let's remember the contributions of all workers, including the immigrants and refugees who enrich our society with their dedication. Through the principles of advocacy, education, and empowerment, we can live out the essence of compassion and justice. By supporting immigrant and refugee laborers, we extend the hands of unity and empathy. This Labor Day, let's not only honor labor but also nurture a culture of understanding, respect, and solidarity.
