Practical Learning
The month of February was marked by a series of hands-on learning opportunities for the Institute for Global Outreach Developments students involved in the Facilities Department through the Institute for GOD's Professional Development program. One of the key projects was the installation and plumbing of a post in concrete, to support safety signage on the playground of the Academy for Global Outreach Developments. This project was not only about ensuring safety but also about imparting crucial construction skills to the students, teaching them the value of precise, durable work in public infrastructure.
Safety First
A paramount aspect of the Facilities Department's educational approach is its focus on safety. The students learned to conduct safety briefings and correctly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) before engaging in the high-risk task of high window cleaning using a 30' mast lift. This experience is invaluable, as it teaches the students the importance of safety measures in preventing accidents and ensuring a secure work environment, especially when dealing with elevated work sites.
Technical Skill Development
Another significant learning milestone was the opportunity to assist with the installation of a washer and dryer. This task introduced the students to the intricacies of appliance installation, including the technical knowledge required to ensure these appliances operate efficiently and safely. Understanding the electrical and plumbing aspects involved in such installations is crucial for anyone aspiring to work in facilities management or similar fields.
Event Preparation and Space
Management
The Pro Dev students played a crucial role in preparing for various Global Outreach Developments program events, demonstrating the importance of teamwork and time management. They were involved in last-minute setups and cleaning efforts, particularly focusing on spaces under the stage and around the Nyumba area.
The Role of Hospitality in Facilities Management
An underlying theme of the students' learning journey is the significance of hospitality in facilities management. Through their work, they have come to understand that organization, cleanliness, and space management are not just about maintaining a physical space but are integral to creating a welcoming, safe environment for everyone on campus. This aspect of their education aligns with the broader goal of preparing students to understand and meet the needs of those they serve, a vital skill in any service-oriented profession.
Teamwork and Collaboration
The accomplishments of the Facilities Department in February 2024 also highlight the power of teamwork and collaboration. The students, by working closely with each other and the department's staff, were able to contribute significantly to the campus's upkeep and safety. This collaborative effort not only enhances the learning experience but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose among the participants.
Reflections and Moving Forward
The GOD Facilities Department has made substantial progress in not only maintaining the campus but also in providing a rich, practical learning environment for its students. The hands-on projects, safety training, and event preparation tasks have equipped the students with a diverse set of skills that will undoubtedly serve them well in their future careers.
As these students progress in their learning, they will be prepared to tackle more complex projects, lead safety initiatives, and contribute to the campus's development in new and innovative ways.
Conclusion
We are excited for the growth of our GOD International Facilities Department and the Institute for GOD's Pro Dev students as they stand as a testament to the value of practical learning, teamwork, and dedication. As these students continue to grow and apply their skills, they not only contribute to the immediate needs of the campus but also lay the groundwork for a future where they can apply these lessons in broader contexts, locally and abroad.
