Moriah Olson returns to Workwell for her third summer of youth employment
My name is Moriah Olson and this summer is my third year as a youth worker for the WorkWell program. WorkWell is such an incredible program allowing young adults to receive a variety of work experiences. We get the option to work with kids and facilitate activities for Camp Skillz, a kids’ summer camp. We can also learn how to grow and harvest food in the garden that is healthy and delicious. Finally, we get the opportunity to work in photography and videography, capturing all that is taking place around us. WorkWell gave me my first job three years ago and I have been so thankful for the program. I am so excited to be working again this year as a Camp Counselor and to grow in my abilities to lead and work with kids.
As a result of the Workwell program, Moriah has grown in competence both socially and professionally
I have learned so many practical skills through the program, from the personal skills of goal setting and financial budgeting to calming a kid down after they took a fall. I have been able to use what I’ve learned about budgeting and it is helping create good habits in me, so that as an adult I will know how to manage my money well. Getting the experience to work with kids allows me to be a better babysitter, and exhibit more patience, kindness, and care. These are just a few of the many skills that I have been able to develop over the past three years. They are practical and they are not going to be wasted. I am so thankful for the care of my employers because they are fostering these gifts and skills in my co-workers and me. They truly care about us as people, beyond just the job we are working.
One of my favorite things about WorkWell is that I get to work with so many of my friends. Work has become a fun experience and something I enjoy doing. This is rare for most people. Typically work– especially your first job– is only a source of income. What is so special about this program is that it’s more than just making money. We grow and develop alongside our friends and people we care about. Work becomes something that is exciting and enjoyable, rather than draining.
Increased responsibility over time mirrors the work force and challenges youth unto Continued Growth
This year, I am working as a High School Intern instead of a Youth Experience Worker, and with this comes more responsibility. My hope for this summer would be to grow in my communication skills and the ability to articulate my words. I see the value in this skill and I know it is something that I can keep improving. I know I will get many opportunities to practice, from talking to kids on a daily basis to speaking with my bosses and co-workers. I believe that a lot of growth will come out of this summer and I cannot wait.
