NuWaterWorks is more than just a program providing water for families. NuWW is also a program that provides opportunities for young people to grow in a skill. Through this program, young people are able to develop a competency that serves their greater community.
Annet is 18 years old. She grew up in Uganda and finished her High School education in 2019. In the Spring of 2020, Annet was planning to attend a vocational school near her home to learn plumbing. Plumbing is not a trade young Ugandan females often pursue; her desire to work in this field as a young woman is unique. However, with Covid-19 becoming a global pandemic, the Ugandan vocational schools closed. Annet wasn’t sure what she could do to continue her education.
Thankfully, our East Africa Field Manager, Francis Lubega, was able to connect with Annet and give her an opportunity to continue learning - despite the closing of Ugandan vocational schools. Through NuWaterWorks, Annet has learned how to install water taps off of a main water distribution line. She can now perform water quality tests that help communities know what contaminants are in their water. With the NuWW pump repair team, Annet has gone out into the field to learn the basics of pump repair. She’s learned how to drill a shallow borehole to access groundwater.
Annet’s education was not put entirely on hold like so many other students her age. Because of our organization, she’s had the opportunity to grow in her desire to work with water systems through practical field experience. Annet has learned skills that can be used to serve her community. We are thankful for Annet, and for the opportunity we have to continue to invest in young people that are eager to learn a practical skill that will serve their communities!
