The Theology and Service Mission

On Nick's first trip to the Philippines he is experiencing the joy of serving those in need.

On Nick's first trip to the Philippines he is experiencing the joy of serving those in need.

This past weekend began the first of what we hope to be a series of trips to the Philippines for older adults that plunges them into a world of need and gives them an opportunity to use their age and experience to serve the poor. Trip participants will be spending a week in Olongapo ministering to the innumerable women adversely affected by sex trafficking, prisoners, the native Aeta residents of the region, and those living in slum communities. The second week of the trip will land them in Tacloban City where they will see some of the roots of the issues they encounter in Olongapo and continue to minister to those who are to this day recovering from the devastating effects of Typhoon Yolanda.

Days of ministry on this trip will be bracketed in the mornings and evenings with Bible studies and theological conversations spurred from readings of two of Mike Garner's books which participants received when they arrived for the trip. Mike's reflections, many of which themselves are derived from his experiences in these cities, naturally lead to deep considerations centered on properly aligning one's life and priorities in light of a call to ministry to the suffering.

The participants on this trip are Brian McElreath, Nick Corniea and his father Jim, and Tammy Byrd. Mike Garner and Nathan Cameron are facilitating this experience. Please join us in praying that this trip will be impactful for all involved and that the team will be unified in meeting the very real needs of the people of Olongapo and Tacloban.
